Reading the information conveyed in the pulse is a key element of Tibetan Medicine. The pulse is used to diagnose both the individual character of the patient as well as the specific pathology. The characteristics of the pulse are affected by the transport, degradation and building processes of the three bioenergetic substances, or humors. Through this palpation, the doctor can determine the nature of the disease, whether it is painful, whether swelling has occurred and if the swelling is hard, soft, big or small, and can also predict the course of the illness.
The pulse diagnosis is a very important and complex method. It is used both to determine the normal state of the individual patient, as well as to diagnose any pathology that may be present in the patient. The pulse diagnosis is based on the fact that the blood circulates through the whole body. While circulating, the blood transports information from all the organs. When we learn how to read this information, we can check the pulse and discover whether there are any diseases or imbalances. Furthermore, one’s own body type and pulse type can be determined. While reading the pulse, both the person’s body constitution and the environmental circumstances must be considered in order to make an accurate diagnosis.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
– Understand the principles of diagnosis in Tibetan Medicine and its categorization of disease.
– Become familiar with the methodology of pulse diagnosis in Tibetan Medicine, and the steps to palpate the blood vessel for maximum information
– Distinguish between the three main types of pulses to determine the individual type of the patient, and learn how this information affects the diagnosis
– Discern basic information about the pathology of the patient relating to the three bioenergetic humors
– Identify the conditions that can affect a pulse reading and learn what instructions to give patients to reduce interference
