At the moment we experience unnecessary pain and suffering in our life because we are not aware that we can actually choose and control which kind of life we want to live. We don’t know yet how to choose a happy over an unhappy life.
The reason for this is that we do not realize that our life is one big dream, one big illusion, created by our mind. Our body and our mind are stuck in this dream and it is very difficult for us to recognize and to control it.
However, it is possible to use the precious practice of Dream Yoga for first working with our ordinary dreams, so that in the next step we can take control and power over our big dream, which is our life. We use our ordinary dreams for this practice because working with these small dreams within the big dream is easier.
Dream Yoga (in Tibetan Milam) is one of the Six Yogas of Naropa, a comprehensive collection of advanced practices of Tibetan Tantrayana Buddhism intended to lead to Buddhahood in an accelerated manner. For the practice of Dream Yoga we use a combination of body postures, mantras and visualization techniques to reach the following four stages:
- Recognizing during our dreams that we are dreaming (lucid dreaming)
- Maintaining stability in our lucid dreaming
- Reaching full functionality of our lucid dreaming
- Within our dream, meditating on the union of bliss and emptiness
Once we become more and more familiar with this powerful practice, we gain more power and control over our life. We learn how to choose the life we want. We learn to choose happiness over suffering.
During this Online Live Retreat, Tulku Lobsang Rinpoche will introduce us to this precious practice of Dream Yoga.
