Teaching Content The Tummo–Bliss Practice is the second stage of the complete Tummo system and arises naturally once the inner fire has been generated and expanded. Within the Six Yogas of Naropa, Tummo unfolds in three steps: first, the Tummo–Inner Fire Practice, where we ignite the flame below the navel and spread warmth throughout the body; second, the Tummo–Bliss Practice, where this rising inner heat melts the subtle energy drops, producing profound physical bliss; and finally, the Tummo–Non-Conceptional State of Mind Practice, in which bliss becomes the basis for meditating directly on emptiness.
Tummo–Bliss is extraordinary because it frees us from our habitual reliance on external conditions for happiness. While ordinary happiness depends on concepts and circumstances, the bliss arising from Tummo is a direct experience – pure, unconditional, and independent. As bliss increases, the distinction between “I” and “you” softens, and attachment, desire, and anger naturally diminish. Negative emotions lose their force, allowing the mind to become open, spacious, and clear.
In this course, Tulku Lobsang Rinpoche focuses on the Bliss stage of the Tummo practice. Although prior experience with the Tummo–Inner Fire Practice supports a deeper experience, it is not required.
