One of the most meaningful journeys a Buddhist can make is a pilgrimage. It is a means for accumulating merit and for opening one‘s heart and mind to accept whatever may come. This pilgrimage is especially auspicious because we make it together with our precious teacher, Tulku Lobsang Rinpoche. It is a truly rare gift to be able to make a pilgrimage with one‘s teacher.
During this Pilgrimage, Rinpoche will be teaching Guru Yoga, the root of Tantrayana practice. In Buddhism, the student-teacher-relationship is very important. Although we all contain the Buddha Nature, we are often not capable of recognizing it. We need a teacher, a guru, to guide this realization within us. Our outer master introduces us to our inner master and our innate wisdom.
Through Guru Yoga we set our hearts and minds in the right way so that we receive the teachings as purely as possible. Guru Yoga helps us to cultivate pure motivation and deep devotion for the teacher and the teachings. This, more than anything, will help us to receive the most benefit from our practices. It also enables the wisdom and realization of the Lama to melt with our mind. It is not sufficient to carry the seed of Buddha Nature in us. We need faith and devotion, so that our Lama can transfer blessings upon us. Blessings are the gateway to change.
This pilgrimage is the perfect place for receiving the Guru Yoga teachings. Lumbini is one of the „four great holy places“ that Buddha Shakyamuni identified as a special place to make pilgrimage. Before passing into parinirvana, he said that for anyone visiting these four holy places, it would be like meeting him in person. It is a sacred place for practicing devotion and for gaining awareness and understanding of the nature of impermanence.
