The Six Yogas consist of various meditation practices. They have their origins in Tantrayana Buddhism and their aim is, to reach the perfection of mind, enlightenment. As the name suggests, they are six different practices that utilise different paths to bring us to enlightenment:
- Tummo, the yoga of inner fire, uses physical and breathing exercises as well as visualisations to open our chakras down to the most subtle level and generate the healing effect of fire.
- Gyulü, the yoga of the illusory body, helps us to develop on a mental level. We discover the cause of suffering and illusions, learn to cut them apart and recognize the true nature of our being.
- Ösel, the yoga of clear light, utilizes sleep on the path to perfection. Because when we sleep, our conceptual thinking dissolves and we find ourselves in a state of mind of clear light.
- Milam, the dream yoga, teaches us to dream lucidly. It means, that we can maintain an alert state of consciousness during the dream, are aware of the dream and direct our dream. If we succeed in this, we can also use the dream for our spiritual practice.
- Bardo, the yoga of the intermediate state during the dying process. When the different elements that make up the body and mind gradually dissolve, we experience different states of mind. Being aware of this and using this important moment for practice will have a profound effect on our next life. We can also free ourselves from the fear of death through regular practice.
- Phowa, the yoga of transferring consciousness at the time of death. At death, our consciousness leaves the body. If we practice Phowa, we train ourselves to transfer our consciousness during our lifetime. If we succeed in directing our transfer of consciousness during death, we do not have to go through the intermediate state of bardo.
Learning the Six Yogas in their entirety is particularly valuable in order to recognize and understand the connections between the various tantric practices. Therefore, Tulku Lobsang Rinpoche will give introductory teachings on all Six Yogas of Naropa in this Retreat. He teaches us these practices out of his conviction that they are very useful, especially in this day and age, to improve our physical and mental health and to grow spiritually.
Tulku Lobsang has an incredible knowledge of the Six Yogas of Naropa. On one hand through transmissions from various masters. And also through his own practice. To receive these valuable teachings directly from a Buddhist master is a great blessing and something very special. Teaching and practicing these Tantrayana practices keeps them alive. This knowledge not only helps us in our meditation practice, but also, for example, when we teach Lu Jong or other techniques. The Retreat is a wonderful and rare opportunity to deepen our knowledge in the profound tantric teachings and to gain comprehensive access to different practices.
