Desire and wanting are powerful forces in our lives. To a very large extent, they determine what we do and what we do not do. We all wish to be happy, yet we fall into the mistaken belief that we will be happy once our desires are satisfied and our wishes fulfilled. In other words, we need a reason to be happy, and therefore we are constantly chasing after something. The result, however, is exactly the opposite: we become unhappy and dissatisfied, and not infrequently we end up hurting those around us.

Tantrayana Buddhism offers effective methods for transforming the power of this constant desire and wanting in a positive way, by turning it into unconditional love and compassion. In this lecture, Tulku Lobsang Rinpoche gives an introduction to this exciting topic.

“Shiné – Traditional Tibetan Shamatha Meditation” is a practice which is peaceful and powerful at the same time. It aims to calm our mind and train it in a way so that it transforms from its usual active and agitated state into a calm and clear one that gradually allows for awareness to arise. As a result, our mind becomes more peaceful and less disturbed by both internal factors like thoughts and emotions, and external factors, like a stressful environment.

The Tibetan tradition has developed potent methodologies for improving the functioning and clarity of the mind. Over many centuries and countless hours, Tibetan masters have closely observed their minds, enabling them to come to know it intimately. What they discovered is that our mind has an innate awareness and calmness. However, having excessive thoughts and emotions causes us to lose that inner calm. When this happens we are no longer alert to what is happening around us, nor what is happening inside of us. Then we are just following our thoughts and emotions around like following a wild elephant.

Knowing both - what is possible and what the challenges are - one can create a very effective program for training the mind and eliciting its natural powers. This is exactly what the Tibetans have done. They have forged a path that leads unquestioningly toward a calm, clear, highly aware mind that is ready to receive the highest realizations. The process to reach there is to first train our mind to be stable and functional. Then, with this stable mind, we do contemplative practices and receive insights into the nature of reality.

In this workshop, Tulku Lobsang Rinpoche introduces us to the precious Shiné method. We will also practice together, so that we can start to experience this authentic Tibetan Shamatha meditation first-hand.

The practice of Tummo-Bliss is a powerful way to liberate ourselves from the heavily dependent version of happiness that we are used to. We normally depend upon external factors for our happiness: we think we need a reason to be happy. But we do not need a reason to experience Bliss. Unlike happiness that is experienced conceptually in the mind, Tummo-Bliss is direct perception through the body.

The practice of Tummo is the first one and therefore the foundation of the “Six Yogas of Naropa” – a comprehensive collection of advanced practices of Tibetan Tantrayana Buddhism intended to lead to Buddhahood in an accelerated manner.

Tummo is our wisdom fire. It is something we naturally have within our bodies. Through a combination of movements, breathing techniques and visualizations we generate the Tummo flame and spread it throughout the body. Through the practice, the flame grows, starting from below the navel and rising higher and higher. This inner warmth melts the body’s subtle energy drops causing an experience of physical Bliss.

The more Bliss we feel, the less we distinguish between ‘I’ and ‘you.’ Feelings of attachment, desire and anger are significantly reduced, allowing for our negative emotions to gradually decrease.

In this retreat, Tulku Lobsang Rinpoche will focus on this Bliss part of the Tummo practice. Rinpoche has an exceptional connection to Tummo, it is his true speciality. Rinpoche has received Tummo teachings and transmissions from different lineages and his deep understanding of this powerful practice makes him an incredibly skillful, wise and compassionate teacher. Tulku-la shares this secret practice openly, because he believes it can bring great benefit in these challenging times.
